How much does the NSW driver knowledge test cost?
Quick answer
How much does the DKT cost in NSW?
The car DKT costs $58. If you do it online, that one $58 fee covers every attempt and you pay it at a service centre after you pass. In person, you pay $58 each time you sit it. Paying on the day you get your Ls
- 1
Pass the DKT
Online at home, or at a booked in-person session. An in-person test is already paid for when you arrive.
- 2
Visit a service centre
After DKT online no appointment is needed. Bring your proof of identity, a completed licence application form and any glasses you wear.
- 3
Pass the eyesight test and pay
Staff check your eyes, then you pay the $32 learner licence fee, plus the $58 test fee if you passed online.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Choose DKT online if you are eligible, so a failed attempt costs nothing extra
- Practise until you pass mock exams comfortably before booking an in-person test
- Ask Service NSW about concessions and fee waivers, including through the Driver Licensing Access Program
- Check you actually need a DKT before enrolling online, because you still pay if you pass one you did not need
Check the fee before you go
All of these amounts are from the Transport for NSW fee schedule that took effect on 1 July 2026, checked on 20 Oct 2026. Fees can change with a new schedule, so confirm the current amount with Service NSW before you visit.
Common questions
- Do I pay for DKT online when I enrol?
- No. You pay nothing up front, and the $58 test fee is paid at a service centre once you have passed and apply for your learner licence.
- Is the learner licence included in the DKT fee?
- No. The $32 learner licence fee is separate and paid at the same visit when you apply.
- What if I fail the in-person test?
- Each in-person attempt costs another $58. You can sit it again the same day if another booking is available.
- Can I get a refund if I switch from in-person to online?
- Service NSW says you may be eligible for a refund of the in-person fee if you cancel your booking in time.
