Road scene · Intersection scenes

Both give way signs: you turn right, they turn left

When you and the car facing you both have give way signs, your right turn waits for its left turn.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 72Asked in general knowledgeShown in one practice question

What it means

Both give way signs: you turn right, they turn left: what is the rule?

Both approaches to this crossroad have a red and white give way sign and a broken give way line. A white car opposite is signalling left, with disc 1, and turning into the street on its left. The yellow car is signalling right, with disc 2, aiming for that very same street. Both paths end in one place, so the left turner goes first and the yellow car follows.

What to do

  1. 1

Slow at your give way line and read what the oncoming driver is signalling.

  2. 2

Let the oncoming left turner into the street before you.

  3. 3

Turn right once its path is clear, finishing behind it.

Right. Not quite. The answer is A.

When both drivers face the same type of sign, the car turning right gives way to the oncoming car going straight or turning left.

Common questions

Who goes first if both cars face give way signs and one turns left?
The car turning left goes before the car facing it that is turning right.
