What it means

High beam on a dark road with nobody within 200 m: what should you do?

You look out over your own yellow bonnet at a dark country road under a starry sky. The headlight beam reaches far up the road, past white guide posts on both edges, and a 200 m label marks how far ahead is empty. The blue high beam symbol glows on the dash. With no vehicle ahead of you or coming towards you inside that distance, full beam is allowed.

What to do

  1. 1

Switch to high beam on a dark road once the way ahead is empty.

  2. 2

Dip to low beam when a car ahead or an oncoming car is within 200 metres.

  3. 3

Watch for the glow of headlights over a crest and be ready to dip.
