GIVEWAY12

Road scene · Intersection scenes

A give way sign where a street meets the road at an angle

At a give way sign, let traffic on the road you are joining pass before you pull in.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 69Asked in general knowledgeShown in one practice question

What it means

A give way sign where a street meets the road at an angle: what is the rule?

A side street joins a busy road on a slant, ending in a broken give way line beside a red and white give way sign. The yellow car is angled at that line, signalling right, with disc 2. A white car coming along the near lane from the right carries disc 1 and goes first. The yellow path then crosses that lane and turns into the far lane. Another white car is moving through further along.

What to do

  1. 1

Slow as you reach the give way line, and stop if you need to.

  2. 2

Look along the road both ways, turning your head further because of the angle.

  3. 3

Enter only once the car from your right has gone past.

Common questions

Do you have to stop at a give way sign?
Only if you need to. If the road is clear you may keep moving, otherwise stop and let traffic pass.
Why is an angled junction harder at a give way sign?
The road you join comes in on a slant, so you must turn your head further to see traffic.
