Green light, full road ahead: wait behind the line

Even on green, stay behind the line until there is room for your whole car past the intersection.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 128Asked in general knowledgeShown in 3 practice questions

What it means

Green light, full road ahead: wait behind the line: what is the rule?

The plate-yellow car is at the stop line with a green traffic light beside it. Across the intersection, white cars are queued nose to tail with no space left. A dashed outline with a red cross marks the spot in the middle of the crossroad where the yellow car would end up stuck if it moved now. Stopped there, it would block the cross traffic when their light changed. Waiting at the line keeps the junction clear.

What to do

  1. 1

Look past the intersection before you move off on a green.

  2. 2

Wait at the line until your whole car will fit beyond it.

  3. 3

Make the same check when turning into a street that is queued up.

Common questions

Can you wait in the middle of an intersection on a green light?
No. If traffic beyond would leave you stopped inside the intersection, do not enter; wait at the line.
What if I want to turn left and the side street is queued?
Stay behind the line until there is room in that street for your car, rather than edging onto the crossing.
