Give way to an ambulance with its lights and siren on, even when your light is green.
Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 79Asked in road safetyShown in 2 practice questions
What it means
An ambulance crossing on your green light: what is the rule?
The plate-yellow car waits at a stop line beside a green traffic light. From the right, an ambulance with red and blue lights, and red arcs showing its siren, is crossing the intersection along a grey arrow heading left. Your green would normally let you go, but a vehicle using its alarms takes priority over it. A siren or flashing lights alone is enough, so you hold back and let it through.
What to do
1
Listen and look for sirens and flashing lights as you near the lights.
2
Stay behind the line and let the emergency vehicle pass.
3
Never pull out in front of one; move off only when it is clear.

Common questions
Must I give way to an ambulance when my light is green?
Yes. An emergency vehicle with its siren or flashing lights on has priority even against your green.
Does it need both lights and a siren before I give way?
No. Either one is enough, so react to flashing blue or red lights even with no siren.
