What it means

What does the 80 km/h speed limit sign mean in NSW?

You meet the black 80 in its red ring on outer suburban arterials, some urban motorways and the edges of towns where homes thin out. Because it sits below the 90 km/h cap for learners and red P drivers, the number on the sign is the limit for everyone, L plates included. It applies from the sign until you pass a different limit.

What to do

  1. 1

Settle at or below 80 and keep a three second gap or more.

  2. 2

Slow further in rain or fog, since a limit assumes good conditions.

  3. 3

Look further ahead, as things happen faster at this speed.

Practice questions with this sign

80

An electronic speed sign over the motorway shows 80 instead of the usual 100. What is your limit?

Right. Not quite. The answer is B.

An electronic or variable speed sign is a real speed limit sign, so the number it shows is the limit while it is lit.

80

As a learner you are on a road signed 80 km/h. How fast may you drive?

Right. Not quite. The answer is B.

The learner ceiling only caps higher limits, so on an 80 km/h road the sign's 80 is your maximum.

Common questions

As a learner, how fast can I drive on an 80 km/h road?
Up to 80 km/h. Your 90 km/h cap only matters where the sign shows more than 90.
Should you drive at 80 in heavy rain on an 80 road?
Not if it is unsafe. The limit is the most you may do in good conditions, so slow down when visibility or grip drops.
