Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 21Asked in general knowledgeShown in 3 practice questions

What it means

What does the 60 km/h speed limit sign mean in NSW?

Busy suburban main roads, the kind with several lanes, traffic lights and shops set back from the kerb, are usually signed 60. The white disc with its red ring and black 60 is a maximum, not a suggested pace. In heavy rain, glare or thick traffic the safe speed sits below the number, and you are expected to drive to the conditions as well as the sign.

What to do

  1. 1

Hold 60 or less from the sign until the next limit sign.

  2. 2

Drop well under it in rain, fog or heavy traffic.

  3. 3

Watch for lower limits at shopping strips and school zones along the way.

Which situation calls for driving well under the posted limit?

Right. Not quite. The answer is B.

Where people can step out between parked cars you need extra time to react, so slow down even though the limit allows more.

Common questions

Can you go over 60 km/h briefly to overtake?
No. The limit stays the same while you pass, so if you cannot get by within it, stay behind.
Is 60 km/h the limit on main roads without signs?
Not automatically. With no sign, a built-up road is 50 and other roads are 100.
