When your lane ends, the car in the lane that carries on goes first, so merge in behind it.
Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 148Asked in road safetyShown in one practice question
What it means
Your marked lane ends and you merge behind: what is the rule?
Two lanes with a broken line between them narrow to one, the left kerb angling across to close the left lane. The yellow car is in that ending lane, a little ahead and signalling right, with a disc marked 2. A white car in the continuing lane, carrying disc 1, keeps straight on. The yellow path bends across into the lane after the white car has gone, never in front of it.
What to do
1
Spot the end of your lane early and signal right.
2
Adjust your speed to find the gap behind the car in the continuing lane.
3
Merge into that gap, never forcing in alongside.
A practice question with this scene
Two marked lanes become one ahead and your lane is the one ending. A car in the continuing lane is slightly behind you. Who should go first?
Right. Not quite. The answer is A.
When you move from an ending lane into another marked lane, you must give way to traffic already in that lane. Slow down and merge into a gap.

Common questions
Who goes first when a lane ends in NSW?
Traffic already in the lane that continues. The driver whose lane is ending gives way.
Is a lane ending the same as two lanes merging with no lines?
No. With no lane lines the vehicle in front goes first, but when a marked lane ends you give way to the continuing lane.
