Road scene · Road markings

Broken line nearer you beside a continuous line

Where the broken line of a pair is the one closer to you, you may cross to overtake if the way ahead is clear.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 132Asked in general knowledgeShown in one practice question

What it means

Broken line nearer you beside a continuous line: what is the rule?

The centre of this two-way road is marked with two lines side by side: a broken one on your side and a continuous one beside it. Near the bottom, a yellow car pulls out around a white car and its yellow path earns a green tick. Higher up, a second yellow car signals right and crosses the lines to turn into a side road. Only the line nearer to you decides whether you may overtake.

What to do

  1. 1

Check which of the two lines is on your side of the road.

  2. 2

Make sure you can see far enough ahead to finish the pass.

  3. 3

Overtake within the limit and return to the left once well clear.
