Pedestrian crossing markings

Give way to anyone on the crossing, and wait until they are completely across.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 81Asked in road safetyShown in 7 practice questions

What it means

Pedestrian crossing markings: what is the rule?

Viewed from overhead, wide white stripes cross a two lane road, with a broken give way line on each side and a round yellow crossing sign at the kerbs. A person stands on the stripes in the lower lane. The yellow car comes from the right in that lane, and a grey car approaches from the left. People on foot have right of way here, so both drivers must let them cross.

What to do

  1. 1

Approach slowly enough to stop, even if nobody is on it yet.

  2. 2

Stop at the give way line for anyone on the crossing.

  3. 3

Wait until they reach the footpath, and never overtake a car stopped there.
