No stopping 20 metres before a pedestrian crossing and 10 metres after it.
Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 172Asked in road safetyShown in one practice question
What it means
No stopping near a pedestrian crossing: what is the rule?
A zebra crossing runs across a straight road, with marked strips along the kerb on each side of it. On the side traffic arrives from, shown by the arrow coming in from the right, the clear space is 20 metres long. On the far side it is 10 metres. Approaching drivers need to see anyone stepping off the kerb, and a parked van in the longer strip would hide a child completely.
What to do
1
Stop no closer than 20 metres on the approach side.
2
Leave 10 metres clear after the crossing.
3
Use the same distances at children's crossings.

Common questions
How far from a pedestrian crossing can you park in NSW?
At least 20 metres before it and 10 metres after it, unless a sign permits closer.
Why is the distance bigger before the crossing?
Approaching drivers need a clear view of the kerb so they can spot people about to step out.
