No stopping near an intersection

Keep at least 10 metres clear of an intersection without lights when you stop.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 170Asked in road safetyShown in one practice question

What it means

No stopping near an intersection: what is the rule?

A side road joins a through road from below. Along the kerb on that side, marked strips run 10 metres each way from the corner, and the two parked cars sit beyond them. A car pulled up inside that space would block the view of anyone coming out of the side road, and hide people on foot crossing it. Where the intersection has traffic lights, the clear space doubles to 20 metres.

What to do

  1. 1

Count roughly two car lengths back from the corner, then add a little.

  2. 2

Make it 20 metres at intersections with traffic lights.

  3. 3

Follow any parking sign that sets a different distance.

Common questions

How close to an intersection can you park in NSW?
At least 10 metres away if there are no traffic lights, and 20 metres if there are, unless a sign says otherwise.
Can you park on the far side of a T-intersection?
Often yes. Along the unbroken kerb opposite the side road, the 10 metre rule does not apply unless a sign says it does.
