Zig-zag lines before a crossing

A pedestrian crossing is coming up, so slow down and be ready to give way.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 81Asked in general knowledgeShown in one practice question

What it means

Zig-zag lines before a crossing: what is the rule?

Seen from above, a road runs up the picture with a broken centre line. Near the top, white stripes cross it in front of a give way line, and white zig-zag lines run along both edges of the approach towards them. The yellow car is driving up between the zig-zags. Those lines warn that a pedestrian crossing is close, so slow down and look for people about to step out.

What to do

  1. 1

Ease off as soon as the zig-zags begin.

  2. 2

Look at both kerbs for anyone about to cross.

  3. 3

Be ready to stop at the line for people on the crossing.
