What it means

Setting your side mirror: mostly road, a sliver of car: what is the rule?

Three side mirror views sit in a row. In the left one, a wide band of yellow car body fills much of the glass, and a red cross marks it wrong. The middle mirror, glowing and ticked green, shows the lane behind with a white car in it and only a thin strip of your own car at its inner edge. The right one shows road only, with no car edge for reference, and is crossed too.

What to do

  1. 1

Adjust your seat first, then set each mirror from your normal driving position.

  2. 2

Turn the mirror out until your car is just a sliver at the inner edge.

  3. 3

Still do a head check before pulling out, as mirrors leave a blind spot.

Right. Not quite. The answer is C.

Common questions

How much of my car should I see in the side mirror?
Just a sliver at the inner edge. The rest of the glass should show the road behind and beside you.
If my mirrors are set right, do I still need a head check?
Yes. Mirrors miss a blind spot beside the car, so look over your shoulder last before you move.
