What it means

What does the pedestrians ahead sign mean in NSW?

Two black walking figures share the yellow diamond, a taller adult on the left and a smaller child on the right, linked by a hand. It warns that people are likely to be walking along or across the road ahead, even though there may be no marked crossing. You might meet it near a busy lookout on a country road, where visitors wander onto the bitumen with little warning.

What to do

  1. 1

Ease off and scan both verges for people.

  2. 2

Give anyone walking along the edge a wide berth.

  3. 3

Be ready to brake if someone steps onto the road.
