70

Regulatory sign · Speed

70 km/h speed limit sign

Drive no faster than 70 km/h from this sign until another limit appears.

What it means

What does the 70 km/h speed limit sign mean in NSW?

A white disc with a broad red ring holds a black 70. It is a maximum, the fastest you may drive in good conditions, and it lasts until you pass a different limit. Learners and red P drivers have a 90 km/h ceiling, higher than this sign, so on L or P1 plates you simply drive to the 70. Those extra 10 km/h over a 60 road add far more stopping distance than they seem to.

What to do

  1. 1

Hold 70 or less, and drop below it in rain or heavy traffic.

  2. 2

Overtake only if you can do it without going over 70.

  3. 3

Give a cyclist at least 1.5 metres when you pass on this road.

Common questions

What is my limit on a 70 km/h road on my P1 licence?
70 km/h. Your 90 km/h cap is only a ceiling, and the lower sign wins.
How much room do I give a cyclist on a 70 km/h road?
At least 1.5 metres, because the limit is above 60 km/h.
