A continuous line between two lanes going your way

Stay in your lane while a continuous line separates it from the next one.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 147Asked in general knowledgeShown in one practice question

What it means

A continuous line between two lanes going your way: what is the rule?

Two lanes run the same direction, each with a white straight ahead arrow painted on it, and a solid white line between them. The yellow car keeps to its own lane with a straight yellow arrow. A faint dashed arrow drifting across into the right lane carries a red cross, even though that lane has plenty of room. The line, not the traffic, decides whether you may move over.

What to do

  1. 1

Hold your lane while the line beside you is continuous.

  2. 2

Plan lane changes for where the line becomes broken.

  3. 3

Signal and check your blind spot once you reach a broken section.
