A divided road begins ahead, with a median separating the two directions.

Asked in general knowledgeShown in one practice questionAdvisory: it warns, it does not command

What it means

What does the divided road sign mean in NSW?

Two arrows point opposite ways, the left one up and the right one down, with a narrow strip standing between them. That strip is a median: ahead, the two directions of traffic are split by an island, a raised kerb or a barrier. You keep to the left of it, and right turns or U-turns may only be possible at gaps in the median.

What to do

  1. 1

Keep left of the median as it begins.

  2. 2

Plan right turns for breaks in the median, where you give way to traffic.

  3. 3

Never drive over a raised or planted dividing strip.
