Railway crossing · Signals and crossings
A railway level crossing is ahead, so slow, look and listen for trains.
What it means
Our drawing marks it with a black X of two crossed bars on the yellow diamond. Ahead, a train line crosses the road at ground level. Some crossings have flashing lights, bells and boom gates, while others only have a stop or give way sign. Trains are heavy and fast and cannot stop for you, so at the crossing every driver goes second.
Slow down, turn down the music and listen as well as look.
Stop for flashing red lights and stay stopped until they go off.
Cross only when there is room to clear the tracks on the far side.
